Clint Council Verdict
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Douglas County District Attorney David McDade announces a guilty verdict in the State’s case against 26 year old Clint Council for attempting to murder his ex-girlfriend. A Douglas County jury took less than half an hour to convict Council of Attempted Murder, Aggravated Assault, and Possession of a Firearm during the commission of a crime. “The defendant’s guilt was overwhelming and that was made very apparent in the jury’s quick decision in this case,” stated District Attorney David McDade. “I hope this verdict will send the message to all criminals that the citizens of Douglas County will not tolerate violent behavior in our community.”
According to evidence presented at trial by Assistant District Attorney Jeff Ballew, on October 4, 2007, two days prior to attacking his ex-girlfriend, Council went to a local sporting goods store and applied for a gun permit. While waiting on the gun permit to be approved, Council made several comments to his family and co-workers that he planned to kill his ex-girlfriend and then take his own life.
On October 6th the victim saw Council’s vehicle on the side of the road as she began her commute to work. Shortly thereafter, the victim was stopped at a red light on Douglas Boulevard in front of the Hampton Inn and Arbor Place Mall when Council’s vehicle approached from behind and intentionally rammed into the back of her, totaling both vehicles.
The victim, fearing for her life, flagged down a passerby and fled the scene, with Council chasing behind her on foot. She called the police and stated that her ex-boyfriend had just hit her vehicle and she was afraid he was trying to kill her. Council, however, was quickly apprehended by law enforcement in front of the Olive Garden on Douglas Boulevard. Officers found Council’s newly purchased, loaded hand gun hidden under the pine straw in the area where he was detained.
District Attorney McDade praised the work of Chief Assistant District Attorney Jeff Ballew in the prosecution of this case by saying “Mr. Ballew has dedicated his life to protecting crime victims and with this verdict he has taken another criminal off the streets of Douglas County. Obviously, we are all pleased with the outcome of this case.”
Council is scheduled to be sentenced in front of Superior Court Judge Robert J. James on August 26th, 2009.
