CHILD ABUSE TRIAL: GUILTY ON ALL COUNTS

On August 24, 2005 a Douglas County Jury took less than one hour to convict Michael Lewis McCoy on Child Molestation charges. The jury, composed of nine men and three women, returned a verdict of guilty on two counts of Enticing a Child for Indecent Purposes, one count of Child Molestation, and one count of Aggravated Child Molestation.

According to the evidence presented at trial by Assistant District Attorney Todd Boyce, McCoy, a resident of Gordon County came to Douglas County and repeatedly molested a 13-year-old girl. The Douglasville Police Department investigated the case and arrested McCoy on February 2, 2006. A Douglas County Grand Jury returned a true bill of indictment on March 17, 2006.

The jury heard testimony from the victim, her family, and Susan Campbell, Ph. D., an expert in child psychology and child sexual abuse. Boyce stated that Dr. Campbell was able to help the jury understand the dynamics of sexual abuse and the mind set of children who are subjected to this criminal behavior.

"I am grateful that the jury saw what we saw in the evidence,” stated Boyce. “Their verdict speaks for itself and I am thankful they were able to say to this defendant, as well as any other criminal, that this crime will not be accepted in Douglas County."

Superior Court Judge Don Howe, who presided over the trial, and has set sentencing for August 30, 2006.

“Todd Boyce did an exceptional job in prosecuting a very emotional and difficult kind of case. I am proud of his work,” said District Attorney David McDade.

Pleased with the outcome of this trial, McDade stated that Boyce worked hard and so did many other staff members that assisted him in his efforts. “We are successful when we work as a team. Everyone from law enforcement, my legal staff assistants, my victim assistance staff, and all of the other attorneys in my office worked to support Todd and bring justice for this victim. I am proud of the fact that Todd’s hard work and the work of the team that supported him will insure that this child molester will be incarcerated for a very long time.
